Home Secretary Faces Scrutiny After Second Uncontrolled Migrant Landing in Two Days

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is facing criticism following a second "uncontrolled landing" of migrants on British shores in as many days. On Tuesday, up to 30 individuals arrived on a Kent beach via small boat before police could reach the scene. Officials confirmed 21 people were detained and transported to a Home Office facility for processing of their asylum claims.

This incident occurred just one day after approximately seven migrants reached another Kent location without interception by UK Border Force. A government spokesperson stated that Border Security Command officers and Kent police responded to the Dover incident, detaining 21 individuals. An investigation is underway, and further comment was deemed inappropriate.

The detained migrants were reportedly taken to Western Jet Foil at the Port of Dover. In response to the two unescorted landings, Ms. Mahmood has ordered an urgent review.

The latest arrival coincided with a lengthy voyage of 51 migrants from Normandy, which took 38 hours. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticized the government, stating that borders are out of control and that illegal immigrants are crossing the Channel freely. He called the two uncontrolled landings and the long-distance crossing a "wake-up call" for the government, asserting that French authorities are not doing enough to prevent departures.

Senior Home Office officials have previously emphasized that preventing uncontrolled landings is a priority due to the risk of migrants disappearing into the country upon arrival. The Tuesday incident is believed to be the largest uncontrolled landing since 26 migrants arrived on Ramsgate beach in August 2021.

Eyewitnesses reported that up to 30 people disembarked on Samphire Beach, located between Dover and Folkestone, shortly before noon on Tuesday. Video footage showed individuals moving up the shingle beach, with some attempting to evade detection by police. One witness described seeing some individuals running westward toward Folkestone, while others moved more slowly.

Meanwhile, police are investigating an anti-migrant activist, Daniel Thomas, also known as 'Danny Tommo', who livestreamed himself slashing a dinghy in the English Channel. Thomas, who has a prior conviction for attempted kidnapping, was reportedly shadowing small boats. Footage shows his boat alongside a dinghy after migrants had been transferred to a lifeboat, and a French rescuer had boarded the empty dinghy to secure it. Thomas then cut through the side of the dinghy, telling the rescuer they were on English territory.

Hampshire Police confirmed they are investigating the video of the dinghy being damaged, which appears to have been filmed on September 22. Separately, police arrested six people in Gosport and Portsmouth after confronting a group of protesters who had gathered, anticipating the arrival of migrants.

French authorities, who shadowed the dinghy across the Channel, stated they decided not to intervene due to safety concerns. It is claimed that as the tide pushed the boat back towards the French coast, an additional 10 to 15 migrants boarded. On Monday, 150 small boat arrivals were recorded, bringing the year's total to 17,630, according to Home Office figures. This total does not include arrivals from Tuesday or Wednesday.

In a separate incident, journalists found the body of a man in his 20s, reported to be a migrant, in Neufchâtel-Hardelot, France, as a packed dinghy was seen departing from a nearby beach.
