Home on Brink of Collapse as Tropical Storm Waves Batter Southern California
Powerful waves from former Hurricane Rachel have caused significant damage to the Long Beach Peninsula boardwalk, with one beachfront home at risk of falling into the ocean.
Powerful waves generated by former Hurricane Rachel have caused extensive damage to the Long Beach Peninsula boardwalk, leading to one beachfront home being on the verge of collapse into the ocean. The storm surge tore apart sections of the boardwalk on Friday morning, with debris visible floating into the sea as high tide peaked shortly after 9 a.m.
Floodwaters inundated nearby streets and patios, exacerbating erosion that is undermining beachfront residences. An observer noted that this period has seen the most damage in weeks, with the boardwalk "shredding away" and impacting homes more severely.
Officials have reported that one home was red-tagged on Thursday, and two others received yellow tags, indicating structural concerns. These properties were unoccupied at the time. Damage assessments continued on Friday to determine if further evacuations would be necessary.
Meteorologists warn that conditions could worsen. Stronger swells and higher tides are anticipated from Sunday night into Monday, potentially increasing the threat to coastal areas. The National Weather Service projects the storm surge could reach approximately 7 feet on Monday.
