Holiday Companies Criticized for Penalizing Single-Parent Families

Holiday companies are facing criticism for pricing structures that appear to penalize single parents and families where a single parent cannot always travel with a partner due to work constraints. The issue arises because many 'family' deals and discounts are based on a two-adult model, leaving single-parent families to pay higher per-person rates.

Rhiannon Picton-James, writing for the Daily Mail, highlighted her experience when attempting to book a holiday with her five-year-old daughter. She discovered that the cost for one adult and one child was often the same as for two adults, effectively meaning the child was being priced as an adult. This is particularly noticeable during school holidays when prices are already inflated.

"Why is a five-year-old being priced like a grown adult?" Picton-James questioned. She pointed out that children of this age do not consume the same services as adults at all-inclusive resorts, such as cocktails, wine, or minibar items, yet they are charged similarly.

The traditional package holiday model, established decades ago, often assumes a two-parent household. This outdated framework does not account for the evolving nature of family structures, including the growing number of single-parent households and families where work commitments prevent both parents from taking leave simultaneously.

While some travel companies have introduced discounts for solo travelers, the specific needs and financial situations of single parents, who may also be traveling alone with their children, have not been adequately addressed. The article suggests that the industry needs to adapt its pricing and offerings to reflect the diversity of modern families.
