New York Governor Kathy Hochul faced a setback in recent primaries, as a number of candidates she endorsed were defeated by progressive challengers, including those backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

During the primary elections, Governor Hochul attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Buffalo Bills stadium, Highmark Stadium, in Orchard Park. Photos captured her on the stadium's grass with team owner Terry Pegula. This appearance occurred as her endorsed candidates struggled in competitive races.

Among the notable Hochul-backed candidates who lost were Reps. Dan Goldman and Adriano Espaillat, who were defeated by candidates favored by Zohran Mamdani, a progressive figure. Additionally, Karen Hoak, endorsed by Hochul for her home Assembly district in Buffalo, lost to DSA candidate Adam Bojak. State Senator Jeremy Zellner, an ally of Hochul, was also defeated by progressive assemblyman Jon Rivera.

Despite the setbacks, two Hochul-endorsed candidates, state Assemblyman Micah Lasher and Assemblyman Jordan Wright, secured victories in their respective races. Lasher won in a crowded congressional district race in Manhattan, and Wright survived a challenge from a DSA candidate in Manhattan. Governor Hochul attended Lasher's victory party.

In response to the primary results and the rise of progressive candidates, Governor Hochul stated that she would work with "everyone" to oppose President Trump. She characterized the diversity of voices within the Democratic Party as a strength, saying, "We speak for many voices. That's the beauty of the Democratic Party, we're not beholden to one voice of Donald Trump."

Former state Sen. Diane Savino suggested that the DSA's success was due to their targeted turnout operations. Savino indicated that Governor Hochul, if re-elected, could maintain her influence in Albany by "wait[ing] them out" and utilizing her structural power in the state government. Savino also commented on Hochul's assertion of party unity, calling the idea of Democrats being "a big team and we all play under one banner" absurd.
