Hochul Backs State Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs for Reelection Amidst Controversy
Governor voices support for Jacobs' continued leadership despite his refusal to endorse Zohran Mamdani, a move that alienated some party members.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has declared her support for Jay Jacobs’ reelection as the chairman of the New York State Democratic Committee, publicly endorsing his continued leadership.
This backing comes despite Jacobs' controversial decision not to endorse Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the 2025 mayoral primary. Jacobs maintained neutrality as Cuomo later ran on an independent ballot line in the general election.
Hochul stated her confidence in Jacobs during a campaign rally in Albany on Saturday, asserting, “It is time for Jay Jacobs to show that he is going to continue being the leader. As I’m the head of the state party, he is my chairman. He’ll be reelected, no problem.”
Jacobs' refusal to endorse Mamdani drew criticism from some within the party. He explained his stance by stating, “Mr. Mamdani and I are in agreement that America’s greatest problem is the continued growth in income disparity in our nation. On how to address it – we fundamentally disagree. Furthermore, as I expressed to him directly, I strongly disagree with his views on the State of Israel, along with certain key policy positions.”
Jacobs, who also chairs the Nassau County Democratic Party, has a history of leadership within the state party, having served in previous stints under Governors David Paterson, Andrew Cuomo, and now Hochul. He has previously indicated his intention to seek another two-year term.
The 480 members of the state Democratic committee are scheduled to vote on Jacobs' reelection on October 1. Some party activists have expressed a desire to replace him following the Mamdani situation. Erica Vladimir, a committee voting member, commented, “Jacobs insulted the Democratic nominee in the largest city in the country. We should stand behind our candidates.” Vladimir added, “Jay Jacobs is not listening to New York Democratic voters.”
Caitlin Ogden, the upstate Otsego County Democratic leader, is challenging Jacobs for the chairmanship. Vladimir suggested that Ogden’s background as a professional fundraiser could benefit the party.
Jacobs acknowledged the potential for a significant bloc of activists to support his opponent but expressed readiness for the challenge, stating, "I take nothing for granted." He also highlighted the importance of gubernatorial support, saying, “It’s important to have the support of the governor and other elected officials. I look forward to another two-year term.” He noted he has engaged in discussions with various party leaders and county officials.
Ogden, in her platform, has advocated for a Democratic Party that is “responsive to the will of the voters” and stated her commitment to supporting all Democrats, regardless of their political leaning. She described her leadership style as “servant leadership, not a party boss” and believes there is a statewide demand for a leader with a clear vision for the party's future.
