Hochul and Mamdani Unite to Criticize Trump and Blakeman
Governor and Mayor hold campaign rally in Brooklyn, highlighting child care investment and accusing Republican opponent of seeking to dismantle programs.
Governor Kathy Hochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani joined forces at a campaign rally in Brooklyn on Sunday, uniting to criticize former President Donald Trump and Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman. The event, held at Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights, focused on the state's $1.2 billion investment in universal child care, a program Mamdani argued Blakeman would seek to eliminate if elected.
Mamdani, a democratic socialist, stated that Blakeman's potential cancellation of universal childcare would increase costs for New York families. "We are living in the most expensive city in the United States of America. We are trying to bring costs down for New Yorkers…and we have a Republican candidate who is to say if he’s to win he will cancel universal childcare," Mamdani told the attendees. He further characterized Blakeman's stance as a losing message, questioning the consultant who advised such a position.
Governor Hochul, a more moderate Democrat, also addressed the rally, accepting cheers of "four more years." She directed sharp criticism at Blakeman, labeling him "next level crazy." Hochul extended her remarks to include attacks on Trump, particularly concerning his rhetoric on election integrity and rising gas prices. "He’s trying to undermine our elections right now so people don’t have the confidence that their vote is protected," Hochul said, referencing Blakeman's stated desire to bring "Trump-style leadership to Albany."
Hochul emphasized the distinction between her administration's record of accomplishments and Blakeman's proposed changes. "What I am also doing is letting them know the contrast between what records of accomplishment look like and feel like, and real change for New York families for someone who loves to fight for New York families. And that is me," she stated. "We are not surrendering to a king. We never have and we never will."
Mamdani and Hochul have publicly endorsed each other's campaigns and have appeared together at multiple press conferences. Mamdani also released a campaign advertisement in support of Hochul. This joint rally follows a previous campaign appearance together in McCarren Park on Friday.
Blakeman, the current Nassau County executive, has previously referred to Hochul as Mamdani's "puppet" and criticized her administration's policies regarding migrants and sanctuary cities. The election is scheduled for November 3, when Hochul will seek her second four-year term as governor.
