Hit-and-Run Suspect Allegedly Said 'I Don't Care' After Fatally Striking Teen
A 16-year-old boy was killed and his sister injured in a Los Angeles hit-and-run; a witness reported the alleged driver returned to the scene and made callous remarks.
A hit-and-run suspect allegedly stated he "didn't care" after he returned to the scene of a crash that killed a 16-year-old boy and injured his younger sister in Los Angeles. The incident occurred Tuesday evening as the siblings and their mother were walking to pick up a prescription.
Hernan Martinez, 16, was struck by a blue sedan speeding down West 60th Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood, according to reports.
Witness Jerome Alexander told ABC 7 that the driver and a passenger fled the scene on foot. Moments later, Alexander stated, a man returned to the car. "A guy came back, opened the back door, moved the airbags out the way, a lot of smoke coming out the car and he grabbed the baby out the backseat and left with the baby," Alexander said.
When Alexander confronted the man, telling him, "Stop touching the car, they just killed somebody's kid," the individual allegedly responded, "I don't care about that."
Alexander had come outside after hearing a "loud bang." Surveillance footage reportedly showed the sedan speeding down the street, and the impact left a large hole in the car's windshield, with airbags deployed.
Alexander found the mother and daughter on the ground near the sedan. "The daughter was partially under our car. At first, she wasn't conscious, and then her mom started talking to her, and her eyes popped open," he said.
Hernan Martinez was found yards away, on top of a vehicle that had struck him, Alexander recounted. "Me and the mom saw him roll off the car and we took off running down there," he said. "The mom tried to grab him, and I tell her: 'No, don't move him real fast.'"
Vicky, 13, was transported to the hospital. Her brother's death had not yet been disclosed to her as of Wednesday, according to her brother, Eliseo Martinez Hernandez.
"She still doesn't know... We told her that he's at another hospital right now," Hernandez told ABC 7.
No arrests have been made in connection with the hit-and-run. Hernandez has initiated a GoFundMe to support his family following his brother's death. "Losing him so unexpectedly has left a pain in our family that is difficult to put into words," he wrote on the fundraising page. The campaign had garnered over $11,000 as of Friday afternoon.
