Historic Northumberland Castle, Built With Hadrian's Wall Stone, Lists for £2 Million

A historic eight-bedroom castle in Northumberland, England, constructed with stone from Hadrian's Wall, has been put on the market for offers exceeding £2 million. Bellister Castle, located in Haltwhistle, dates back to the 12th century and sits within four-and-a-half acres of land, surrounded by 1,200 acres of National Trust parkland.

The Grade-I listed property, which was owned by the Blenkinsop family until 1697, spans 4,778 square feet. Estate agent Sanderson Young describes the property as an opportunity to "buy into the fabric of England," noting that it combines modern luxuries with historic features.

The castle was significantly renovated by architect John Dobson in 1826 and has since been restored by its current owners, Andrew and Jacqueline Greening, to blend its historical integrity with comfortable modern living. Features include decorative plaster ceilings, wood panelling, and a mahogany staircase.

"Anyone who wishes to experience the majesty and excitement of waking up in a historic English Castle would not be disappointed," Andrew Greening stated. He also noted the potential for further development of the farmhouse and stables into a multi-generational dwelling.

It comes with a number of outbuildings and a two-bedroom lodge

In addition to the main castle, the sale includes a two-bedroom lodge and courtyard outbuildings. The property's location provides proximity to the Lake District, rural Northumberland, and the Scottish Borders, while offering privacy.

Current owner Andrew Greening said there is ‘significant potential’ for buyers hoping to make it their own rural haven

The castle has been lovingly restored by its current owners, offering 'modernity... against a backdrop of outstanding historical features'

Its manicured gardens are set within 1,200 acres of National Trust parkland

The estate agent highlighted the rarity of such a property and its potential to appeal to those seeking a unique historical residence.
