A beloved Los Angeles taquito stand, Cielito Lindo, has reopened its doors after a community-driven rescue effort raised over $53,000, averting a permanent closure. The family-run business, a staple on Olvera Street for nearly 90 years, had been closed for six weeks beginning May 12 due to urgent electrical repairs and other maintenance.

The temporary shutdown exposed deeper financial difficulties, including rent arrears accrued during COVID-19 closures, alongside mounting city-imposed late fees and interest. Owners cited rising operating costs in Los Angeles as a major challenge in maintaining affordable prices while remaining financially viable.

Founded in 1934 by Aurora Guerrero, an immigrant from Mexico, Cielito Lindo has been passed down through four generations. The stand is renowned for its hand-rolled taquitos topped with a signature avocado sauce.

In May, a social media appeal highlighted the need for funds to "keep Cielito Lindo alive for future generations." This plea galvanized support, leading to a GoFundMe campaign that collected $53,000. The donations provided the necessary financial relief for the historic stand to address its immediate needs and prepare for reopening.

Cielito Lindo announced its return with a Facebook post stating, "WE’RE BAAAAACK. After six long weeks behind the scenes, we’re finally open! We’ve already served hundreds of you over the last couple of days and…boy, were you jonesing for taquitos and avocado sauce! Thank you for your patience, your support, and for welcoming us back. We can’t wait to see the rest of you soon!"

The eatery is now gradually resuming operations, with plans for updated pricing and new specials as repairs are fully completed. ![A street sign with the words "Calle Olvera" in white script hanging from an ornate black wrought iron bracket.]( "A street sign with the words "Calle Olvera" in white script hanging from an ornate black wrought iron bracket.")
