Historic Hampshire Beauty Spot Becomes Rubbish Dump

A historic field near Bramley, Hampshire, has been transformed into a wasteland due to years of fly-tipping, with an estimated 400 tons of rubbish accumulating in the area.

The site, described by a local resident as 'measles on the landscape,' is strewn with abandoned vehicles, fridges, tires, mattresses, and other household waste. Evidence of multiple fires, including toxic black smoke from burning tires, has also been reported, with the fire service attending on multiple occasions.

Residents have watched the deterioration of the site since the early 2000s, when the land was reportedly divided into dozens of small plots and sold off. This fragmented ownership has made it difficult to address the ongoing issues, according to locals. They have contacted various authorities, including MPs, the Environment Agency, and the police, over the years with limited success.

Environmental concerns are mounting due to the site's location on a floodplain beside Bow Brook. Residents fear that during periods of heavy rainfall, waste could be washed into the brook, affecting downstream watercourses and local wildlife. Some residents have noted a decline in local wildlife, such as barn owls, which they believe may be linked to the environmental damage.

The Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed it was called to a fire at the site on September 18 and is appealing for witnesses. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council stated that the problems are subject to an active investigation.
