Historic Country Home With Celebrity Pedigree Lists for $18 Million
Stapleford Park, a 15th-century estate that has hosted royal events and celebrity weddings, has closed its doors and is now on the market.
A historic 15th-century country estate, once a luxurious hotel and wedding venue frequented by celebrities and royalty, has been put up for sale for £18 million (approximately $23 million USD). Stapleford Park, located in Leicestershire, England, ceased operations in October 2024 due to 'adverse trading conditions,' leading to the cancellation of scheduled events.
The Grade I-listed property spans 54 acres and features a 48-bedroom mansion. It gained prominence as a celebrity hotspot and a venue for significant events. In 2011, television personality Peter Crouch and model Abbey Clancy held their wedding ceremony at the estate. Earlier, in May 2007, the venue hosted the 25th birthday celebration for Prince Abdul Azim of Brunei, attended by pop star Michael Jackson. The estate has also hosted members of the British royal family, including former monarchs George VI and Edward VIII.
Over the years, Stapleford Park served as a luxury hotel, attracting a host of A-list guests such as Lionel Richie, David Beckham, Will Smith, Elizabeth Hurley, Mariah Carey, and Naomi Campbell. In 2018, the rock band Guns N' Roses stayed at the estate during the Download Festival. The grounds, featuring a miniature railway, were also utilized in an episode of the television series The Avengers.
A Rich History
The history of a house on the site of Stapleford Park dates back to the 11th century, according to the Domesday Book. The estate was held by the Sherard family for nearly 500 years. During their ownership, the renowned landscape architect Capability Brown was commissioned to redesign the parkland and the Hall. The estate was sold by the family in 1885.
In more recent times, American restaurateur Bob Payton purchased the property in 1988 with the vision of converting it into a hotel. He reportedly invested significantly in its renovation, engaging designers from Wedgwood, Turnbull & Asser, and Crabtree & Evelyn for interior decoration. Later, British businessman Peter de Savary, an enthusiast of historic houses, owned the estate and was responsible for adding facilities such as the indoor swimming pool and wellness center.
Current Offerings and Future Potential
The sale, managed by agents Strutt & Parker, includes the country house, a seven-room spa and wellness center, four tennis courts, and an indoor pool. The property is being sold "lock, stock, and barrel," suggesting immediate potential for a new owner to take over operations.
Mark Rimell, director of Strutt & Parker's national country house department, highlighted the property's significance. "Stapleford Park is one of the most important houses in Leicestershire, in the heart of England, with a rich and varied history woven into this commanding building," he stated. Rimell added that the property offers a clear opportunity to revive it as a country house hotel or establish an exclusive country members' club. He also noted that restoring the house to a private residence is a possibility should there be sufficient interest.
