The National Park Service is seeking a seasonal volunteer to serve as a caretaker for the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse and its surrounding area on a scenic Northern California peninsula. The chosen individual will receive rent-free accommodation in an apartment near the Lighthouse Visitor Center from November 6 through February 1.
The role aims to foster stewardship and connection with the Point Reyes National Seashore among park visitors. The volunteer will work approximately 30 hours per week, assisting at the Lighthouse Visitor Center and the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse itself, as well as engaging with visitors in the immediate vicinity.
Responsibilities will include staffing the visitor center, selling merchandise, answering questions about the area's natural and historical significance, and giving 15-minute talks on the lighthouse's history. The volunteer will also be expected to help ensure the safety of the lighthouse.
The apartment provided comes with utilities, internet, basic furnishings, laundry facilities, and parking. However, the volunteer must cover their own grocery expenses and provide a personal vehicle. Pets are not permitted.
The Point Reyes Lighthouse, constructed in 1870, historically served to warn ships of the treacherous Point Reyes Headlands. Its active service concluded in 1975 when the U.S. Coast Guard installed an automated light, and authority was transferred to the National Park Service. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
Access to the lighthouse today involves a walk from the Visitor Center followed by a descent down several hundred stairs, contingent upon safe weather conditions.
Interested individuals must undergo a background check and have their references verified. Training will be provided to those selected for the position.
