Hinson Accuses Turek of Neglecting Duties, Calls for Taxpayer Reimbursement
GOP Senate hopeful Ashley Hinson criticizes Democratic opponent Josh Turek's legislative attendance record and use of per diem funds.
Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) sharply criticized her Democratic opponent, Josh Turek, for his voting record in the Iowa Legislature during a U.S. Senate debate Wednesday, accusing him of neglecting his duties and misusing taxpayer funds. Hinson stated that Turek missed 58% of legislative votes this year, including those related to the Iowa Farm Bill, policies she argued could have supported Iowans and farmers.
"He was one of the most absent, and he was one of the most liberal when he did show up to vote," Hinson said of Turek, a state representative. She asserted that in the private sector, such absenteeism would lead to termination.
Hinson also alleged that Turek benefited from a state per diem program, which she claims he took advantage of despite his absences, and demanded he refund the money. She estimated Turek received $20,000 through this program.
Turek, in turn, challenged Hinson's own voting record in the U.S. House of Representatives, citing 193 missed votes and votes he characterized as cuts to healthcare during a state healthcare crisis. He also criticized Hinson for using a federal per diem, amounting to approximately $50,000, despite being a multimillionaire.
Hinson responded by stating Turek also utilized a similar taxpayer-funded per diem program in Iowa. "So you took the per diem. You stole from taxpayers. You should refund that money," Hinson stated.
The Iowa Senate race is considered one of the most closely watched contests that could influence party control of the chamber in January 2027. Current polling averages show Turek holding a narrow 1-point lead over Hinson.
