Hilton and Becerra Make Final Campaign Pitches in Tight Race
With the election just days away, both candidates are intensifying their outreach and highlighting key policy differences.
As the election approaches, Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra are making their closing arguments to voters, focusing on distinct policy priorities and campaign strategies.
With four days remaining until the election, Hilton was in Sacramento focusing on issues of homelessness and the high cost of living in California. Meanwhile, Becerra was in San Francisco engaging with LGBTQ+ leaders.
Hilton's campaign highlighted his plan to expand hands-on job training in construction, manufacturing, and engineering, aiming to address workforce shortages and provide good-paying jobs. He also planned to unveil a homelessness strategy intended to improve public safety and help individuals transition off the streets.
Becerra, on the other hand, participated in a morning reception with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie. He was also scheduled to appear with Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sunday at an event in Hollywood.
The candidates have recently clashed over affordability, with Hilton criticizing Becerra for not ruling out a mileage tax on drivers. Hilton stated, "As governor, I will veto the mileage tax." A spokesperson for Becerra's campaign countered, "Secretary Becerra has not proposed a mileage tax."
Hilton's Friday schedule included visits to the California Construction College Academy and Loaves & Fishes, culminating in a rally at Cal Expo focused on the cost of living. Becerra's Friday included engagements in San Francisco and a visit to Los Angeles.
Looking ahead to the final weekend, Becerra's itinerary includes campaigning in Modesto with Democratic Rep. Adam Gray on Saturday, followed by appearances in Oceanside with state Senator Monique Limón and other Democratic officials on Sunday. He is also slated to join Democratic Rep. Dave Min in Irvine and attend a rally with Newsom in Los Angeles.
Becerra's campaign aims to energize supporters through a series of events across the state, drawing on the backing of various Democratic allies and community leaders.
