Hilary Swank Embraces Motherhood's Timeline at 52, Offers Hope to Fans
The acclaimed actress shares her philosophy on life's timing and opens up about her journey to motherhood.
Hilary Swank, 52, is embracing her late-in-life pregnancy, attributing her journey to the belief that "things happen in their time, not ours." The actress recently announced she is expecting her third child with husband Philip Schneider, 53, three years after the birth of their twins.
Swank's announcement resonated with many, particularly a fan who expressed hope that a similar path to motherhood could still be possible for her at 39 and childless. The actress responded with words of encouragement, stating, "It can! I always go by the adage, things happen in their time, not ours, and that has always been the case for me. But of course trusting that, for me, has always been the hardest part. Wishing you unwavering trust and abundant beauty on your journey!"
A Deliberate Path to Motherhood
In a previous interview with Women's Health magazine, Swank detailed her fertility journey, revealing she froze her eggs at 37. She welcomed her twins at 47 and became a mother at 48. Swank clarified that while she didn't intentionally wait to have children, the timing at 47 felt "magical" and was right for her for "myriad reasons."
She emphasized the importance of having the "ability to freeze my eggs for later," noting that it eased the pressure associated with starting a family later in life.
The Rewards of Mature Motherhood
Swank also expressed gratitude for becoming a mother at an older age, believing she would not have been the same parent as a younger woman. "I'm a very different parent than I would've been, even in my early 40s," she told the magazine. "I'm much more patient. I'm much more understanding. I am much more, I think, interested in a different way than I would've been."
She finds herself deeply engaged with her children's development, stating, "I'm really interested in their brains. I'm fascinated about what makes them tick. And I have my career that's already established, so I'm not divided."
This allows her to be more present and hands-on as a parent. "I'm able to really sink in and be present with them and be a hands-on parent."
Swank announced her current pregnancy via a TikTok dance trend, using glowsticks to reveal the baby's presence over her belly. Her husband and their two children participated in the reveal.
Swank, an Academy Award winner for her role in "Million Dollar Baby," married her husband, Philip Schneider, a social venture entrepreneur, in 2018. The couple met on a blind date in 2016.
