Hiker Survives 100-Foot Fall After Getting Wedged Between Rocks
A 20-year-old woman sustained multiple injuries but is recovering after a perilous fall on an early morning hike.
A 20-year-old woman miraculously survived a 100-foot fall while hiking with friends in Iron County, Utah, last Thursday morning. She became wedged between a rock and the cliff face after falling in the dark near the Red Hollow Trailhead.
The group had set out before dawn to watch the sunrise when the incident occurred. The woman, whose identity has not been released, sustained a head injury and was disoriented about the events, according to the Iron County Sheriff’s Office.
Search and rescue officials reported that she also suffered apparent fractures to her leg and arm, along with injuries to her ribs or back, and multiple cuts. She was experiencing significant pain.
First responders worked to free the hiker from the narrow space and requested an emergency helicopter. After being stabilized and secured in a rescue basket, she was carefully lowered to the canyon floor. From there, she was transported to a waiting helicopter and taken to a local hospital, where she is currently recovering.
The Iron County Sheriff’s Office advised visitors to the Red Hollow area, a popular spot for sunrise viewing, to exercise extreme caution. They recommended avoiding hiking near steep drop-offs in darkness or low visibility conditions.
