Hiker Keith Kerr described a terrifying encounter with a mother grizzly bear and her two cubs in Kootenay National Park, British Columbia. Kerr was on a narrow trail when he stumbled upon the bears.
"I heard the gnarliest sound I have ever heard in my life. A low gurgling growl...Mama bear comes around, and she's in my spot before I get there. She is so fast, and at this moment, I literally think this is going to be it for me," Kerr told CTV News.
The mother grizzly bear reportedly bluff charged Kerr four times, but did not launch an all-out attack. Such charges are often a defensive behavior where a bear runs towards a perceived threat to intimidate it before retreating.
This incident serves as a reminder for individuals to remain vigilant when hiking in bear country. Wildlife experts advise maintaining a safe distance from bears, making noise to avoid surprising them, and carrying bear spray.
