The search for a missing 24-year-old hiker, Ian Roberts, in California's American Canyon has concluded with his discovery on Tuesday. Roberts was reported missing after he went for a solo walk in the remote riverway on Friday.
Search teams from multiple counties, including Napa, Santa Clara, Marin, and Sacramento, joined Placer County authorities in the extensive hunt. Roberts' body was found on the third day of the search operations. Authorities suspect he fell down a steep embankment.
"At this time, it appears he slipped and fell down a steep embankment," said Elise Soviar, a spokesperson for the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. "There’s no indication of foul play."
Roberts had likely parked his car at Overlook Park, a trailhead for paths leading into the American River Canyon, for what was expected to be a rugged hike. The American River Canyon area, characterized by rugged gorges carved by three forks of the American River, extends from the Sierra Nevada foothills to Folsom Lake. The location where Roberts was found is within the Auburn State Recreation Area and Auburn city limits. The Auburn Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
