High School Football Coach Resigns Mid-Game After Confrontation With Players
Stamford High School principal cites 'poor judgment' and 'confrontational exchanges' in a letter to parents explaining the abrupt departure.
A Connecticut high school football coach abruptly resigned at halftime of a game on October 23 following what school officials described as "confrontational exchanges" with his players. Stamford High School head coach Donny Panapada "demonstrated poor judgment while coaching the first half of the game," according to an email sent to parents by principal Matthew Forker.
The exact nature of the exchanges remains unclear. Panapada declined to comment on the incident to CT Insider. The email from Forker, obtained by CT Insider, stated that the school's athletic director spoke with Panapada, other coaches, and players to understand the circumstances surrounding the mid-game resignation.
Panapada remained at the school site but did not coach the second half of the game, which Stamford lost 42-14 to Fairfield Warde. Forker's email emphasized that "confrontational exchanges with student athletes during a game, in front of a large crowd of families from both schools, followed by an in-game announcement of his resignation and a decision not to resume coaching responsibilities, are inconsistent with the standards we expect from those entrusted to lead our student athletes."
Forker noted that Panapada expressed remorse for his actions. However, he stated that there was "not a viable path forward for coach Panapada to rescind his resignation and resume his role as head coach." Despite the circumstances of his departure, Forker acknowledged Panapada's past positive influence on students, adding that "those contributions are not diminished by the circumstances surrounding his resignation." He concluded by reiterating a head coach's responsibility to "lead by example and conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively on the student athletes, coaching staff, and the entire school community."
Stamford High School currently holds a 3-3 record and is ranked seventh in the CIAC Class LL standings. The team is scheduled to play undefeated St. Joseph's, the second-ranked team in Connecticut, on Saturday.
