St. Wilfrid's Church in Melling, near Lancaster, was on the verge of closure before a serendipitous discovery of gold coins provided a much-needed financial reprieve. The hoard, found on Good Friday, April 3, is being described as a "miracle" and an "answer to their prayers" by church representatives.
The value of the discovered coins is estimated to be £30,000. Church officials plan to use these funds as a "seed" to support grant applications and other fundraising initiatives necessary for carrying out essential repairs to the historic building. Rev. Jane Lee stated that the funds would be dedicated to addressing the needed repairs, rather than being used for day-to-day operations.
This significant find occurred years after similar anonymous gifts were reportedly received by other churches in the area in 2022. However, St. Wilfrid's Church had not previously received such a benefaction until this discovery. Lee noted the significance of the timing, stating that the church now has more community backing than it did four years ago, when the funds might have been immediately allocated to operational costs. "Well now it's there for a seed to get all the repairs done that need to be done," she remarked.
The discovery has revitalized hope for the church's future, transforming a situation that was leading to its closure into one with potential for preservation and continued community service. The gold coins are believed to have been hidden by a mystery benefactor approximately four years ago.
