Hidden Camera Found on Australian Navy Ship Sparks Investigation
The Australian Defence Force confirmed a recording device was discovered in a ship's cabin, prompting an investigation after a senator raised concerns about potential footage being shared online.
A hidden video recording device was discovered in a cabin aboard the Royal Australian Navy ship HMAS Leeuwin, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) confirmed Sunday. The incident led to the vessel remaining docked in Cairns, Queensland, to facilitate an investigation.
Independent Australian senator Jacqui Lambie brought the matter to public attention Wednesday, stating she had been contacted by personnel with allegations of concealed cameras in female sailors' shower facilities. The ADF has not specified whether the device was found in a female-only area.
Lambie told the Australian Senate that she was informed the discovery prevented the ship from sailing and expressed further concern over claims that footage from such devices may have been uploaded online. "How many of our female sailors have unknowingly been recorded in their most private moments?" Lambie questioned in parliament. "How much footage has been distributed online so far, retained or uploaded without knowledge or consent?"
The defence department confirmed awareness of the device in a statement, emphasizing that it takes the incident "extremely seriously" and does not tolerate "unacceptable behaviour in any form." The ship remained alongside its berth to allow for the investigation and to ensure immediate support for the crew. The welfare of individuals is noted as the department's priority, with ongoing support being provided.
Due to the ongoing investigation and the need to protect the privacy of those affected, the ADF stated that further comment would not be provided at this time. The matter has been referred to the Joint Military Police United.
