HGTV Contractor Dies While Hiking Mount Whitney

Kalem Peter Kazarian, a contractor from Fowler, California, who was featured in an HGTV pilot, died Monday while hiking in Sequoia National Park. The Tulares County Coroner’s Office confirmed his death but stated the location as Sequoia National Park, not Mount Whitney as initially reported by local news outlets. Kazarian was 52.

Kazarian was known for his work as a contractor in the Fresno area. He contributed to a 2019 episode of HGTV’s “Go Big or Go Home.” His wife, Jonelle Kazarian, posted photos on social media showcasing their shared love for hiking, including a recent climb of White Mountain and celebrations of their 27th anniversary.

Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, presents significant challenges to hikers. The primary route, the Mount Whitney Trail, is a 21.7-mile round-trip trek with over 6,000 feet of elevation gain. A more technical mountaineering route also exists up the east face.

Deaths on Mount Whitney, while not frequent, do occur. In January, one hiker died after venturing ahead alone while their companion turned back. Last December, the body of 21-year-old Joseph Brambila was recovered after he went missing during a solo hike, with authorities suggesting he likely suffered a fall. Dangers associated with hiking the mountain include altitude sickness, falls, and severe weather conditions, particularly in colder months. Early fall is generally considered the optimal time for hiking Mount Whitney, and permits are required for the ascent.
