Hershey's CEO Explores New Products Amidst Weight-Loss Drug Trend

Hershey's is introducing a new protein powder in January as part of an effort to appeal to health-conscious consumers and adapt to the growing popularity of weight-loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. The company's CEO, Kirk Tanner, has been engaging directly with consumers to understand how these GLP-1 medications are impacting snacking habits.

Tanner acknowledged that while consumers still enjoy traditional treats, they are consuming them in smaller quantities due to the appetite-suppressing effects of these drugs. With projections indicating that nearly 30% of obese adults in the U.S. could be on GLP-1 drugs by 2035, Hershey's is focused on innovation to maintain its market position.

The company is drawing inspiration from competitors, with Tanner noting that Mars has been consistent in introducing new products. Hershey's is venturing into the protein powder market through a partnership with VitaKey. Tanner has increased Hershey's research and development spending by 25% since taking over last year, aiming to foster a more innovative product pipeline.

In addition to protein powder, Hershey's is also expanding its gum and mints division, which saw an 8% increase in sales earlier this year, partly in response to "Ozempic breath"—a reported side effect of GLP-1 drugs. The company, which owns brands like Skinny Pop, Dots Pretzels, and Pirate's Booty, is also exploring savory options and portion-controlled packaging.

The protein snack bar market is experiencing significant growth, projected to expand from $21.94 billion to $32.66 billion by 2031, representing an 8.2% annual growth rate. The success of brands like Rxbar, which was valued at $2.25 billion this year, highlights the market's potential.

The rise of GLP-1 drugs presents a broad challenge for the food industry. Other major food companies, such as Conagra, are reportedly analyzing consumer data to understand evolving purchasing behaviors and preferences in light of these new medications.
