A Venice father lost his leg after he threw his 2-year-old daughter, Sadie, to safety moments before a speeding truck struck him last month. Jordan Stannard, 38, was alert only to the need to save his daughter as the vehicle lost control and headed toward them.
"My first thought was, ‘Get Sadie into a safe place,’ so I basically threw her into the cabin of my car," Stannard told KTLA.
The incident left Stannard with severe injuries. Doctors at UCLA Medical Center determined that his left leg would need to be amputated due to significant trauma to his foot and lesser damage to his right leg. Despite the life-altering injuries, Stannard expressed gratitude for being alive and able to see his two daughters, Sadie and his six-month-old. He is committed to his recovery and aims to return to activities he enjoyed before the accident, including running marathons.
"I have two daughters, so you have to do what you have to do to get back to holding your daughters and chasing your kids around, to helping your wife out with raising the kids," he said. He has set a goal to run the 2027 Los Angeles Marathon.
Stannard's family has launched a GoFundMe campaign, seeking $120,000 to help cover medical expenses, rehabilitation, adaptive equipment, housing needs, and lost income. As of the report, the campaign had already raised approximately $118,000.
Bystanders called 911 after witnessing the accident and Stannard's injuries.
