Hero French Bulldog Dies Protecting Owners From Bear Attack
Cassie, a 7.5-year-old French bulldog, succumbed to injuries sustained while defending her owners from a bear that had entered their rural California property.
A California couple is mourning the loss of their French bulldog, Cassie, who died after bravely protecting them from a bear attack on their rural property near the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.
The incident occurred early Saturday when Jeff and Mallory Wilson were awakened by their dog barking. Jeff Wilson went to investigate and encountered a bear near the gate of their property. As the bear charged and knocked him backward, Cassie intervened, placing herself between Jeff and the animal.
Mallory Wilson, hearing her husband's distress, came outside to find the bear holding Cassie in its jaws. She attempted to fend off the bear by throwing a chair, and Jeff further deterred the animal by pushing a patio heater toward it, causing the bear to retreat. Cassie, who had suffered severe injuries, initially appeared to be recovering.
Despite showing signs of improvement, Cassie died the following morning from her injuries, which included multiple bite wounds and deep cuts along her spine. A friend of the couple established an online fundraiser to assist with recovery costs.
Jeff Wilson sustained two broken ribs and numerous bite and claw wounds, while Mallory Wilson suffered serious injuries to her head and face, along with other bite and puncture wounds. The couple described Cassie, their pet, as a "funny, stubborn, loving, incredibly brave, and completely devoted" companion who was "never meant to be a hero."
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating the incident. A spokesperson noted that such bear attacks are rare. The Wilsons have reportedly asked that the bear not be euthanized, though they remain heartbroken over Cassie's death, believing her actions saved their lives.
