Hero Dog Alerts Family to House Fire in Oregon, Perishes in Blaze

A fire broke out at a home in Tigard, Oregon, a suburb of Portland, around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, rapidly engulfing the structure in flames. The family's dog alerted residents to the emergency, allowing them to escape. Officials with Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue confirmed that the dog is believed to have died in the fire.

One resident sustained burns, and another suffered injuries after jumping from a balcony to escape the blaze. Three other occupants fled the home unharmed. The injured individuals were transported to a local hospital and are expected to recover, according to the Tigard Police Department.

Pet birds inside the home are also presumed dead, while another dog from the residence survived. Firefighters battled the flames from the exterior due to the intensity of the fire, employing hose lines on all sides of the home. The fire was brought under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby trees and shrubs, despite limited access to fire hydrants.

Later, around 7 a.m. the same morning, the fire reignited, prompting fire crews to return to the property to extinguish hotspots. The home has been declared a total loss, and the displaced family has made arrangements for alternative housing.

Just before 7am that same morning, the fire reignited, and fire crews had to rush back to the property to put out hotspots

Several vehicles parked on the property were also damaged by the fire. Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the blaze. Police bodycam footage captured the scene upon an officer's arrival, showing the home fully engulfed in flames. The officer can be heard asking if anyone was inside, with a woman responding that the entire house was on fire.
