A Pennsylvania father described the terrifying moments he fought off an alligator that attacked his 11-year-old son, leading to the amputation of the boy's hand. Peter Dituri recounted the June 27 incident in Marion County, Florida, where his son, Brodie Dituri, was bitten while releasing a fish back into the water.

Brodie, who had been fishing with his father during a family vacation, was targeted by an approximately 8-foot-7 alligator. Peter Dituri intervened immediately, jumping onto the reptile in an attempt to pry open its jaws and shouting for someone to call 911. He described his actions as purely instinctive.

During the struggle, the alligator rolled, a predatory behavior to dismember its prey, which severed part of Brodie's hand. Peter Dituri stated that emergency responders indicated his intervention prevented the alligator from pulling his son into the water.

Bystanders assisted after the attack. Peter Dituri expressed gratitude for the help he and his son received.

Before the incident, the father and son had enjoyed fishing trips in Florida for the past few years, with Brodie showing a strong enthusiasm for the activity. However, the traumatic experience has left Brodie fearful of the state, and his father indicated they would not be returning to Florida anytime soon.

Brodie Dituri is currently undergoing medical evaluations for a possible hand transplant or prosthetics.
