Hero Barber Restrains Alleged Attacker of Australian MP Helen Haines
A barber is being hailed a hero for intervening when a man allegedly drove a vehicle into federal MP Helen Haines outside her electorate office.
A barber has been credited with heroism after confronting and restraining a man accused of deliberately driving a vehicle into federal Member of Parliament Helen Haines outside her electorate office in Wangaratta.
Ricky Jefferies, owner of a barber shop next door to Haines's office, described how he rushed to assist when the incident occurred on Monday afternoon. Jefferies stated he pulled the alleged assailant from a white Toyota LandCruiser, found a flick knife in his pocket, kicked it away, and held him on the ground until police arrived.
"It happened directly out the front of my shop," Jefferies said. "I pulled the man out of the white Landcruiser."
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised Jefferies's actions on Tuesday, calling him a "Good Samaritan" whose intervention may have prevented further harm. "I just think that he deserves enormous praise and thanks for his intervention, which could have prevented even more further infliction of damage, which was aimed at Helen," Albanese told Nine.
Haines, 65, suffered severe lower-body injuries after being repeatedly struck by the vehicle. Witnesses reported that the driver made a U-turn to ram Haines against another vehicle, then reversed and struck her again. She underwent emergency surgery in Melbourne and is in a critical condition, with fears she might lose a leg.
Brendan Nugent, a 43-year-old man from Tarrawingee, was arrested at the scene. As of Tuesday morning, no charges had been formally laid, and counter-terrorism authorities had launched an investigation into the incident. Prime Minister Albanese indicated that the attack appeared deliberate rather than accidental, noting a concerning rise in threats against politicians. "We've seen, I think, political discourse go in the wrong direction in recent times and I want us to acknowledge in the way that politics is conducted," Albanese commented.
Helen Haines, the independent MP for Indi, is known for her advocacy on rural issues, healthcare, and integrity in politics. She played a significant role in establishing the National Anti-Corruption Commission. Her other priorities have included climate action and regional housing. She has also advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza. Before entering politics, she worked as a nurse, midwife, and rural health researcher.
Haines's family issued a statement expressing gratitude for the assistance provided by bystanders, health workers, and police, and requested privacy. "We thank the swift assistance of bystanders and the dedicated health workers who assisted her, and police for their response," the statement read. "Our family, and Helen's staff, will be making no further comment at this time, and ask that their privacy be respected by the public and media. Please keep Helen in your thoughts."
