Herbert Expresses Confidence in Johnston's Offensive Involvement Amidst Chargers' Struggles
Quarterback Justin Herbert stated his belief that wide receiver Quentin Johnston is already being integrated into the offense, despite the Chargers' early-season offensive woes.
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert indicated on Wednesday that he believes wide receiver Quentin Johnston is already actively involved in the team's offensive schemes. This statement comes as the Chargers' offense faces early-season challenges.
Herbert addressed the team's offensive performance and Johnston's role during his media availability. "I think Mike [McDaniel] has already done a good job in trying to get him involved," Herbert said, referring to the offensive coordinator. "I think he’s got a bunch of targets in ways to get him the ball in space. But we can always do a better job in getting him the ball and making sure he’s doing something special with it."
Johnston has seen 10 targets through the first two games of the season, resulting in three receptions. The Chargers selected Johnston in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. While he possesses the physical attributes for a deep threat, dropped passes have been a notable issue. According to Fox Sports, Johnston has recorded 13 career drops, with seven occurring in 2024.
The Chargers' offensive struggles extend beyond Johnston's involvement. The team ranks 29th in the league in points scored, averaging 14 points per game, and 22nd in total yards with 289 yards per contest.
Herbert's individual statistics also reflect a downturn. His completion percentage has fallen to 59.3, and he ranks 31st in the league in QBR with a 28.7. The Chargers' offensive coordinator, Mike McDaniel, was brought in to improve the team's offensive performance, particularly after their limited scoring in the previous season's playoff loss to the New England Patriots. However, the offense has shown a decline in production thus far.
