Hellebuyck Shines in Devils Debut as New Jersey Rout Dallas
Goalie makes 16 saves in 5-1 victory following blockbuster trade.
Connor Hellebuyck made 16 saves in his New Jersey Devils debut on Tuesday, helping his new team secure a 5-1 victory over the Dallas Stars. The win marked the Devils' fourth consecutive victory.
Hellebuyck, who was acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Winnipeg Jets just days prior, allowed only one goal in the contest. His debut comes after a prolonged standoff with the Jets, from whom he had requested a trade. This game was Hellebuyck's first NHL start since April 13, 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the goaltender in New Jersey.
New Jersey established an early lead, scoring just under three minutes into the first period. Nico Hischier contributed two goals for the Devils, while Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes each added a goal and an assist.
Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and a gold medalist with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics, had not played in an NHL game during his dispute with the Jets. He publicly requested a trade in late August, despite having five seasons remaining on his contract, and did not report for training camp last month. The Jets subsequently suspended him for his absence.
Following his first practice with the Devils on Monday, Hellebuyck expressed his anticipation for the game. "It felt good getting acclimated with a new group and having some fun out there," he stated. "I’m just really excited to play hockey again. That was the hardest part about all of this, wanting to go back and not being able to."
The Devils are currently third in the Metropolitan Division.
