Independent federal MP Helen Haines is in a stable condition as she recovers in The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, following an alleged attack that resulted in the loss of both her legs.

On October 19, Haines was allegedly struck by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta, north-east Victoria. She was initially reported to be in a critical condition.

A spokesperson confirmed her status had improved, stating, "The patient is in a stable condition at The Alfred."

Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged in relation to the incident, facing multiple charges including dangerous driving causing serious harm and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. He remains in custody.

Sources close to the investigation have indicated that Nugent claims the incident was accidental and driven by panic, asserting he did not intend to hit Haines. He reportedly stated he had previously voted for Haines, who has represented Indi since 2019.

Police and federal authorities are exploring potential connections between Nugent and Haines, as well as investigating a possible rift within Nugent's family. Nugent's father and his partner have reportedly been friends with Haines for over two decades.

All political parties expressed support for Haines when Parliament reconvened. Fellow independent MP Zali Steggall placed an orange cockatoo cutout on Haines' empty seat, describing her as the "matriarch of the crossbench."

Nugent's case is scheduled for a committal mention hearing at Wangaratta Local Court on February 4.
