Secretary of War Pete Hegseth quickly reversed the temporary suspension of eight National Guard Apache helicopter pilots who participated in a low-altitude flyover during South Carolina's "Salute from the Shores" event on July 4th. The pilots were initially suspended pending an investigation into their flight path.
Video of the Apache helicopters flying low over a South Carolina beach, met by cheers from onlookers, circulated widely online. Following the event, the pilots were informed of their suspension, which was intended as a routine administrative measure, according to a spokesperson for the South Carolina National Guard. Maj. Lisa Alle, a spokesperson for the South Carolina National Guard, clarified that the suspension was not punitive and that the pilots remained in good standing, continuing their work and receiving pay.
Upon learning of the suspension, Hegseth posted on X, "We’ll fix this. Carry on, Patriots." Shortly thereafter, Sean Parnell, a Pentagon spokesman and senior advisor to Hegseth, announced that the suspension was lifted, stating, "effective immediately, the suspension of all involved South Carolina pilots has been lifted. Carry on Patriots."
The decision to suspend the pilots drew criticism from some online commentators and political figures. Conservative influencer Matt Van Swol expressed disbelief, and Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., stated that the pilots "deserve to be CELEBRATED, not chastised."
The South Carolina National Guard confirmed in a statement that the state adjutant general had lifted the administrative suspension. The statement referred to the pilots as "experienced aviators" and noted that returning them to flight status was crucial for maintaining the Guard's operational readiness. The Guard also emphasized its "unwavering commitment to excellence and Soldier safety" and thanked the community and state leaders for their support.
Sources indicated that the "Salute from the Shores" event was part of broader celebrations for America's 250th anniversary. Other events included military flyovers and parades in various cities, such as New York City, which hosted a parade of tall ships and military aircraft flyovers on the Hudson River. These events aimed to showcase the nation's military capabilities and commemorate its history.
