Some individuals in these positions may be downgraded rather than eliminated entirely.

Hegseth has characterized his efforts not as a "slash-and-burn exercise" but as a "deliberative" process designed to enhance strategic readiness and operational effectiveness through "prudent reductions."

The proposed personnel changes are anticipated to further strain the relationship between the Pentagon and lawmakers on Capitol Hill, where previous reduction initiatives have already faced criticism from Republican representatives.
