Hegseth Announces Plans for New US Military Base, Focus on Warrior Prowess

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has announced plans to construct the first new military base on U.S. soil in over four decades. The initiative, revealed during his “State of the Force” address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, is part of a broader effort to modernize the military and enhance troop readiness. Hegseth also emphasized a renewed focus on physical and mental toughness for service members.

"We haven’t built a new base in this country in 40 years. That ends now," Hegseth declared. "President Trump is a builder, and this project is about doing something bold, beautiful, and world-class for the great Americans who wear our nation’s uniform."

The proposed base is expected to house between 15,000 and 25,000 troops and will feature "first-class" barracks. The selection process for the base's location will involve state governors and adjutant generals presenting their proposals to Hegseth and his leadership team in a televised competition. President Trump may also participate in this selection process.

Hegseth stated that the new base will be built with "timeless classical architecture," aligning with the president's executive order on civic architecture. Currently, the U.S. maintains approximately 335 domestic military bases out of roughly 750–800 known bases worldwide.

Beyond the new base construction, Hegseth outlined five additional initiatives:

New Initiatives for the Department of War

• Autonomous Warfare Command: This new command will oversee the rapid integration of autonomous systems across the joint force.
• America’s Corps of Cadets: This program will partner with conservative colleges and universities to establish new Corps of Cadets programs.
• FORTRESS America: The Pentagon aims to make bases self-sufficient by equipping them with independent power supplies and strategic reserves of munitions and critical supplies.
• Office of Religious Affairs: This new office, led by a chaplain, will ensure adequate resources for chaplaincies and places of worship on bases.
• Project Meridian: A commission, to be led by Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and Newt Gingrich, will focus on planning for the future of combat.

Hegseth also confirmed the department's plan to reduce general and flag officer positions by 20%.

During his address, Hegseth strongly advocated for a shift away from what he termed "woke" or "weak" military policies. "The ideological clowns are out. The patriotic cowboys are in, with testosterone testing on top," he stated, referencing his recent push for testosterone level checks for troops over 30 to ensure combat readiness. He also highlighted reforms to impose "gender-neutral standards set at the highest male standard" for combat roles.

The Secretary of War also addressed the military's recent performance in global operations, including in Iran and Venezuela, while fiercely criticizing the media. "Our so-called press makes Iranian state media look reasonable," he asserted, labeling critical reporting as "anti-American" and "treason."
