Health Officials Warn of Skin Cancer Signs Beyond Moles

Following a prolonged period of intense summer heat, health experts are drawing attention to less commonly recognized signs of potential skin cancer, emphasizing that warning signs extend beyond typical moles. Dermatologists advise vigilance for conditions such as red, scaly patches, which can also indicate sun damage.

The recent record-breaking summer temperatures, coupled with high UV index readings, have heightened concerns about the cumulative effects of sun exposure. When the UV index reaches levels like 8, as it has been, exposed skin can be susceptible to burning in as little as 15 minutes, underscoring the need for awareness regarding skin health.

Dr. Justine Hextall, a dermatologist, notes that while moles are often the first characteristic people associate with skin cancer, other visual cues should not be overlooked. Red, scaly patches, persistent dryness, or changes in skin texture in sun-exposed areas can also be indicators of abnormal cell growth that warrants medical evaluation. Early detection is crucial for effective treatment of skin cancers.
