Headteacher Dies After Heart Attack at Special Needs School

Rachael Booth, the headteacher of The Willows special needs school in Rotherham, has died after suffering a heart attack at work last Wednesday.

Staff members at the school rushed to her aid and attempted resuscitation efforts before she was taken to a local hospital. Mrs. Booth passed away on Tuesday.

She had been a part of The Willows school for 16 years, initially joining in 2010 as the head of mathematics. She worked with pupils aged seven to 19.

Warren Carratt, CEO of the Nexus multi-academy trust that oversees the school, informed parents of her death in a letter, describing her as an "energetic, compassionate and inspirational headteacher." He noted that school staff "fought so hard to resuscitate Rachael," enabling her family and friends to be with her during her final days.

Following Mrs. Booth's cardiac arrest, the school closed. It briefly reopened until her death and then closed again. The Willows is scheduled to reopen on November 2, following the half-term holiday.

Tributes have poured in for Mrs. Booth from students, parents, and friends, with many describing her as an "angel" and a "wonder woman." Olivia Kelly, a former student, stated that Mrs. Booth had helped her significantly during difficult times and made her "feel supported when they needed it most."

An Ofsted inspection in November of last year praised the school's management and teaching, characterizing the learning environment as "inclusive and nurturing." Inspectors observed that pupils' "high attendance reflects their enthusiasm" and that teachers cultivated a "calm, friendly atmosphere."
