HBO's 'War' Premieres with High-Stakes Divorce Battle

HBO's new legal thriller, "War," debuts with a premiere episode that immediately plunges viewers into a high-stakes divorce battle between a wealthy tech mogul and an A-list movie star. The series, created by George Kay, known for his work on "Killing Eve" and "Lupin," sets the stage for a complex legal and personal conflict.

The premiere episode, titled "It's Done," introduces Morgan Henderson (Dominic West), the founder of the wildly successful social media platform Zephyr. Celebrated at a lavish industry event for his company's ethos of positivity, Henderson's personal life soon reveals a stark contrast. He embarks on an affair with Flora Monroe (Rose Williams), a young woman who discreetly provides evidence of his infidelity to his estranged wife, Carla Duval (Sienna Miller).

Duval, a movie star promoting her new film, is simultaneously preparing for divorce. She enlists the services of Nicholas Taylor (James McArdle) and Serena Byrne (Phoebe Fox), a high-profile legal team aiming to elevate their firm by taking on her high-profile case. Taylor, who previously handled the couple's prenuptial agreement, and Byrne face the challenge of building a case around photographic evidence that could be construed as entrapment.

Meanwhile, Henderson has retained Beatrice “Queen Bea” Ubosi (Nina Sosanya) and St. John Smallwood (Pip Torrens) of Cathcarts, London's top law firm. They employ a strategy to frame Henderson as the wronged party, aiming to manage the public narrative and mitigate the fallout from his alleged infidelity.

The series visually contrasts the opulent, modern settings of Henderson's tech world with the stark, traditional environments of the competing law firms. The narrative quickly establishes that the legal strategies will prioritize outcomes over strict adherence to the law, with Budgie (Celia Imrie), a lead barrister for Taylor & Byrne, eager to engage in the legal combat.

"War" also introduces Johnny Warren (Archie Renaux), a seemingly scrappy lawyer working for Taylor & Byrne who is revealed to be a mole for the opposing side. This twist adds another layer of intrigue, suggesting that everyone involved may be playing multiple roles.

The episode highlights the immense wealth and power dynamics at play, with the immense sums of money flowing through the legal proceedings and the high-profile cast, including West and Miller, who convey significant tension even with minimal dialogue. The series promises a messy, intricate exploration of power, influence, and personal relationships, centered around the Duval-Henderson divorce and complicated by the presence of their son.
