Lynsey Lonberg, a longtime friend of actress Hayden Panettiere, has shared her grief and memories following the star's death at age 36. Lonberg, whom Panettiere referred to as her "second mother" in her memoir, spoke about the actress's "heartache" and the struggles she faced throughout her adult life.
Panettiere was found unresponsive at her home in Greenville, South Carolina, on Sunday. Police stated that their preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances. A post-mortem examination revealed no trauma contributing to her death, and the official cause and manner of death are pending.
Lonberg, who knew Panettiere since she was a toddler, described the actress as a deeply emotional and loving individual. She recalled Panettiere's childhood fondness for animals and her focused dedication as an actress. However, Lonberg also acknowledged the significant difficulties Panettiere encountered, particularly after the birth of her daughter in 2014, which involved a difficult delivery and prolonged postpartum struggles.
Lonberg, 73, also noted Panettiere's battles with drug addiction, stating that the actress "tried and tried and tried to get past her struggles." Lonberg suggested that the pressures of the entertainment industry contributed to Panettiere's challenges, noting the availability of substances on film sets.
Panettiere's daughter is living with her father in Ukraine. Lonberg expressed that Panettiere did her best for her daughter, but balancing her acting career with motherhood proved challenging. "She never stood a chance," Lonberg said, reflecting on the impact of Hollywood on the actress's life.
Lonberg remains in touch with Panettiere's father, Alan "Skip" Panettiere, and expressed her condolences for his loss, noting that he had also lost his son, Jansen Panettiere, in 2023. Hayden and Jansen were reportedly close growing up, and Lonberg shared childhood photos of them. "I can’t imagine losing a child, but for him to lose both of his children, I can’t imagine how difficult that must be for a parent," Lonberg stated.
Lonberg recalled Panettiere's visits to her home over the years, where she would interact with Lonberg's animals. She remembered Panettiere as a passionate animal lover, even from a young age. Panettiere also frequently visited her father in Piermont, New York, a place where Lonberg noted she felt comfortable and safe.
Lonberg's account highlights the personal struggles behind Panettiere's public persona, painting a picture of a talented individual who battled significant personal challenges. The circumstances surrounding Panettiere's death are still under investigation.
