Actress Hayden Panettiere, who died at 36, endured physical pain for two decades stemming from a severe accident during the filming of "Racing Stripes" when she was 14. The incident, which occurred while she was riding a zebra, resulted in a concussion, whiplash, and neck injuries that would recur over the years. Panettiere detailed in her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," that these injuries would flare up, leading her to seek opioids.
Sources familiar with her struggles noted that while addiction has complex elements, the physical pain was a significant factor. Panettiere's opioid use became linked to her neck injury flaring up, a situation she continued to manage decades after the accident. This physical pain is understood to have been a catalyst in her subsequent battle with drug and alcohol addiction.
Panettiere's struggles with addiction began at age 15. She previously spoke about using "happy pills" to appear more energetic during interviews. Her addiction reportedly worsened following the birth of her daughter, Kaya, in 2014, when she experienced postpartum depression and turned to alcohol.
Despite seeking treatment, Panettiere felt the underlying depression that fueled her drinking was not adequately addressed. In 2020, she entered an eight-month rehabilitation program, where a doctor warned her that she would die within five years if she continued drinking. During her time in rehab, Panettiere stated she began to confront her issues, finding that sobriety allowed her to process her feelings. She described her recovery as an "everyday battle" in a 2022 interview.
Panettiere was found unresponsive on Sunday at an Airbnb in Greenville, South Carolina. A 911 call log indicated she was in cardiac arrest, and later audio suggested a suspected overdose. The Greenville County Coroner's Office has completed an autopsy, and preliminary findings revealed no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the official cause of death.
