Tributes have poured in for actress Hayden Panettiere, who died at the age of 36. Panettiere, known for her roles in the television series "Nashville" and "Heroes," passed away recently, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues and friends.
Selma Blair, an actress who previously battled multiple sclerosis, shared her sorrow on social media, commenting on Panettiere's final Instagram post. Blair wrote, "I love you. Don't be gone. Don't be gone. Please. Please," and added, "I'm dying. Please be here."
Other notable figures also paid their respects. Tia Mowry, known for "Sister, Sister," expressed her heartbreak with a broken heart emoji. Rosie O'Donnell, a talk show host and comedian, wrote, "Oh my god – heartbroken."
Melissa Barrera, who starred with Panettiere in "Scream VI," posted on her Instagram Stories, "Rest in peace sweet Hayden."
David Arquette, a co-star from "Scream 4," tweeted, "I love you Hayden."
Bethany Joy Lenz, who played Haley James Scott in "One Tree Hill," described Panettiere as a "wild little blonde" and shared memories of her precocious talent on set. Lenz recounted Panettiere's intelligence and emotional depth even as a child actor, noting, "Her intelligence was astonishing. She understood scenes and nuance and human struggle like no child I’d ever seen on camera."
Lenz also expressed disbelief at the news, stating, "I dont understand how this is real. Everything seemed to be turning around. She was coming BACK to life, wasn’t she? It’s too young and there’s still so much more life. And her daughter…. Hayden, you are surround[ed] by love. I’m sorry for every moment I didn’t reach out or check in. This can’t be real."
Randall Slavin, who was in the final picture shared on Panettiere's account, reposted the image with the message, "Peace be with you, H."
Panettiere's father, Skip, confirmed her death, telling Page Six, "She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen. We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss."
While the cause of death has not been officially released, a source close to the actress told TMZ that she had been complaining of back pain over the past year.
Panettiere had been open about her struggles with opioid and alcohol addiction and postpartum depression. In a July 2022 interview with People, she revealed, "I would have the shakes when I woke up and could only function with sipping alcohol." She was hospitalized with jaundice and entered a rehabilitation facility in 2020, spending eight months there.
A doctor had reportedly told her, "If I didn’t stop drinking, I’d be dead within five years." Panettiere stated she felt "more clear-headed than I’d ever been" upon leaving rehab in 2021.
The actress was a mother to daughter Kaya, 11, whom she shared with retired heavyweight boxer Wladimir Klitschko. The couple began their relationship in 2009 and were engaged in 2013 before separating in 2018.
Panettiere spoke about her experience with postpartum depression, telling People, "I never had the feeling that I wanted to harm my child, but I didn’t want to spend any time with her." She relinquished custody of Kaya in 2018, the same year she split from Klitschko.
"It was the hardest thing I could do," she said, explaining her decision. "But the best thing for my daughter was to make sure she was okay, take care of myself and make sure I could be a good mom to her. And sometimes that means letting go."
Panettiere described her daughter as an "amazing child," adding, "She’s smart, and she’s funny, and for whatever reason, she still loves me. She’s a happy kid open to a huge world. And she has more love than anybody I’ve ever met."
In February 2023, Panettiere suffered another personal tragedy with the death of her brother, Jansen, at the age of 28. The actress chronicled her battles in her memoir, "This is Me: A Reckoning," published in May.
