The cause of death for actress Hayden Panettiere, who died on August 16 at age 36, has been officially confirmed as an accidental overdose due to the toxic effects of multiple drugs, including fentanyl. A spokesperson for the Greenville County Coroner’s Office stated that an autopsy revealed no signs of trauma and ruled the manner of death as accidental.
The toxicology report indicated the presence of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol, and Quetiapine. Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, is 50 times stronger than heroin and can cause a fatal overdose in very small amounts. Authorities initially suspected a drug overdose at the time of her death at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina.
Sources previously suggested that Panettiere may have consumed a single oxycodone pill laced with fentanyl, obtained from a dealer in Los Angeles. It was reported that she had taken multiple drugs purchased in Los Angeles before flying to South Carolina, where she was found unresponsive.
Panettiere's representative had previously issued a statement emphasizing that the death was under investigation pending toxicology results and cautioned against unverified reports. "While we are all eager to find closure and better understand the circumstances surrounding her passing, we must remain patient and allow the investigative process to unfold," the statement read.
First responders were called to a condo in Greenville, South Carolina, where resuscitation attempts were made before Panettiere was pronounced dead. Her on-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, were present at the scene. Hickerson's lawyer stated that police confirmed no signs of foul play.
Panettiere began her acting career as a child and gained wider recognition for her role in "Remember the Titans" (2000). She later starred as Claire Bennet in the superhero drama "Heroes" and as Juliette Barnes in the series "Nashville," earning two Golden Globe nominations for the latter. Her film credits include "Bring It On: All or Nothing," "Raising Helen," "Scream 4," and "Scream VI."
She is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya, from a previous relationship. Her father, Skip Panettiere, announced her passing, calling her "an incredible light and a force of nature."
