Hayden Panettiere's Cause of Death Revealed as Accidental Overdose

The official cause of death for actress Hayden Panettiere has been determined to be the toxic effects of multiple substances, including fentanyl, 4-ANPP, alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. The Greenville County Coroner's Office ruled the manner of death as an accident.

Panettiere, 36, was found unresponsive in a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, 2026. Emergency medical services responded to a 911 call reporting a cardiac arrest at approximately 1:51 PM. Despite resuscitation efforts, she was pronounced dead at 2:32 PM. Autopsy results found no signs of trauma that would have contributed to her death.

According to reports, Panettiere had been temporarily staying at the residence. Her on-and-off boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, was present at the scene and reportedly provided authorities with a bag containing medications she had been taking. Hickerson and his brother had called 911 after finding Panettiere unresponsive.

The DEA has also been contacted and is reportedly assisting in the ongoing investigation. Panettiere's representatives have previously spoken out against speculation surrounding her death, calling it disrespectful to her memory and those who are grieving.

Panettiere, known for her roles in "Nashville" and "Heroes," had been open about her past struggles with opioid and alcohol addiction, as well as postpartum depression. In May, she released her memoir, "This Is Me: A Reckoning," detailing her experiences, including her time as a child star and the subsequent challenges she faced in adulthood.

Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her passing with "profound sadness," describing her as "an incredible light and a force of nature." He added, "We ask for privacy as our family takes time to process this unimaginable loss."

In 2015, Panettiere welcomed her daughter, Kaya, with then-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko. She later spoke about the difficulties of postpartum depression and how it affected her relationship with her child. Due to her struggles with addiction, Panettiere relinquished custody of Kaya to Klitschko in 2018, and their relationship ended. She had discussed the decision to let her daughter go as one of the hardest things she had to do, driven by a desire to be a good mother.

In July 2026, Panettiere canceled an appearance at a convention due to an unspecified emergency, which a representative attributed to a private family matter.
