Hayden Panettiere exhibited mobility challenges on the set of her final film, "Sleepwalker," scheduled for release in 2026, according to her co-star Lori Tan Chinn. Panettiere "moved a little slower for her age" but did not complain of specific pain, Chinn told Page Six. The actress was reportedly cautious to avoid injury during production.

Erick Orellana, Panettiere's hairdresser and friend, stated that the actress was experiencing "really severe" health issues in the months preceding her death, including significant back pain that at times made it difficult for her to move her legs. "I know she suffered earlier this year with her back," Orellana said.

Justin Chatwin, another co-star on "Sleepwalker," described Panettiere as "lonely" and "struggling" while filming. Other members of the cast and crew remembered her as a kind and compassionate presence. Chad Verdi, CEO of Verdi Productions, noted Panettiere's deep care for the production and her protective attention towards child actors, drawing from her own experiences as a child actress. Marissa Sawaia, the makeup department head, recalled warm conversations with Panettiere, particularly her joy when discussing her daughter.

Panettiere passed away from an apparent overdose. According to the Greenville County Coroner's Office, the autopsy found no signs of trauma contributing to her death. The Greenville County Police Department is investigating the circumstances, with preliminary findings not indicating foul play or suspicious activity.

Panettiere had been open about her past struggles with alcohol and substance abuse. Before her death, she had reconnected with ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson, with whom she had a tumultuous relationship that included past domestic violence allegations and a restraining order she obtained in 2020. Hickerson was present at the scene when she died. He had been facing felony domestic violence charges, and a request to reduce them was denied shortly before her death.
