The Hawk Fire, a fast-moving brush fire in Northern Nevada, has rapidly expanded to over 8,000 acres, prompting evacuations and threatening hundreds of homes just outside Reno. As of Saturday, the fire had grown to 8,020 acres, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office confirmed that approximately 1,000 homes were threatened and evacuation orders have been expanded. Truckee Meadows Fire Chief Richard Edwards described the fire as a "very dynamic incident" fueled by winds that cause it to move rapidly into residential areas. He advised residents to monitor evacuation orders, leave early if instructed, and prepare a "go-bag."
Earlier in the day, Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue reported that the fire was progressing to the Northeast on Saturday evening. Firefighters are working to contain the blaze amidst challenging, wind-driven conditions that complicate efforts to protect lives and homes.
