A fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the Hawk Fire, has rapidly expanded to approximately 2,500 acres near the Tahoe region, triggering evacuation warnings for communities along the California-Nevada border. As of Saturday afternoon, fire crews reported 0% containment.
The fire ignited northeast of Verdi in Washoe County, Nevada, situated about 30 to 40 miles north of the Lake Tahoe area. High winds and low humidity have been identified as significant factors contributing to the fire's swift progression across the landscape.
The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office issued a “Get Set” evacuation warning for Zones E024 and E061, which encompass the Verdi and Long Valley areas situated on the California-Nevada border. Residents in these zones are advised to prepare for potential evacuation as the fire continues to grow.
Meanwhile, mandatory “Go Now” evacuation orders have been issued in Nevada for areas north of Verdi and northwest of Somersett, indicating a more immediate threat in those locations. With the fire's rapid spread and its proximity to the popular Tahoe region, authorities are urging residents in the border communities to remain vigilant and ready to evacuate.
