Hawaii voters head to the polls Saturday to decide primary contests, with the race for governor appearing to be a largely settled affair and a closely watched battle unfolding in the state's 1st Congressional District.
Incumbent Democratic Governor Josh Green faces three lesser-known primary challengers, including George "Teva" Lucas-Tadeo, a self-described Democratic socialist. David "Duke" Bourgoin, who lost to Green in the 2022 primary, is again running, as is Lauren Kapoliahiʻiaka Shim, CEO of Aloha AI Incorporated. As of June 30, none of Green's primary opponents had reported any campaign fundraising, according to Honolulu Civil Beat. Green, first elected in 2022, has raised approximately $3.5 million.
On the Republican side, Gary Cordery, owner of Kingdom Builders, and entrepreneur Ken Fujiyama are competing for the nomination. Both have proposed plans to address Hawaii's high cost of living and housing affordability crisis. Cordery has advocated for reducing the state's general excise tax on food and medicine, while Fujiyama suggests developing 100,000 residential lots. The winner will face an uphill battle against Green, whom the Cook Political Report rates as "Likely Democrat" with a 13-point advantage.
Congressional District 1 Primary
The primary for Hawaii's 1st Congressional District features a contest between incumbent Democratic Rep. Ed Case and state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole. Case, seeking his seventh term, emphasizes his seniority on the House Appropriations Committee and the influence it brings to Hawaii.
Keohokalole, endorsed by Our Revolution, the group associated with Sen. Bernie Sanders, is running on a progressive platform that includes support for Medicare for All and opposition to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and former President Donald Trump's tariffs. Keohokalole has criticized Case for voting with House Republicans on the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship for voter registration.
Given the district's strong Democratic lean, the winner of the Democratic primary is expected to be favored in the general election.
Polls are scheduled to close at 7 p.m. local time.
