Kirill Basin, a Democratic candidate challenging Rep. Jill Tokuda for Hawaii's second congressional seat, was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening following a brawl on a Maui beach. The incident, which involved Kama Homan, a local business owner, began when Basin allegedly played music too loudly, leading to a confrontation.

According to Homan, Basin became increasingly agitated and threatened other beachgoers. Homan, who has mixed martial arts training, intervened. Viral footage showed Homan striking Basin, knocking him unconscious. Homan stated that Basin pulled a knife during the altercation and also claimed Basin had a gun. Homan turned a knife over to the police, which he said Basin had discarded into the ocean.

Basin appeared in court and remains jailed on $1 million bail. His attorney, Brandon Segal, described the bail as "outrageous" and asserted that his client is presumed innocent. Segal disputed claims that Basin possessed a knife or firearm during the incident, stating there was no evidence in circulated videos to support these allegations.

This is not the first legal issue for Basin. He was previously arrested in May on a charge of first-degree terroristic threatening after allegedly pulling a gun on officials during an incident at a government building. A court had recommended Basin undergo a mental health assessment.

Homan, a construction business owner and a nominee for Young Small Businessperson of the Year by the Maui Chamber of Commerce in 2024, stated he intervened because it was the right thing to do, regardless of Basin's political aspirations.

Elon Musk commented on the fight footage via X, posting "FAFO."
