Hasan Piker Says He's 'Dialed Down' Controversial Commentary After Democratic Backlash

Twitch streamer Hasan Piker stated that he has reduced his controversial commentary after facing significant backlash from Democratic Party figures and campaigns. Piker discussed the ongoing controversy during an appearance on the "Pod Save America" podcast with co-host Jon Lovett.

Piker acknowledged that some of his statements, particularly those made in an Axios interview where he described America as worse than al-Qaeda in terms of terrorism, have been taken out of context. However, he also admitted to making a conscious effort to moderate his language.

"I have to in my mind make this calculation of: Should I be honest about what I believe? Should I take a principled stance on something, or should I portray myself as a campaign surrogate and act as though I am running for office?" Piker said. "And I’ve definitely dialed down. I know it doesn’t seem like it. And I’ve definitely dialed down my commentary with that in mind for sure."

Piker suggested that the backlash against him is partly fueled by Republicans seeking a strong midterm election narrative. He argued that the intensity of criticism directed at him, a streamer, is disproportionate compared to that faced by politicians.

"The idea that a Twitch streamer is supposed to be held to a higher standard than the president is such an insane phenomena that it could only be concocted by a bunch of out-of-touch people in mainstream outlets that think this is a salient narrative that will definitely work because people don’t care," Piker stated.

Piker gained national attention for campaigning with Michigan US Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed during the Democratic primary. Following his primary victory, El-Sayed has sought to distance himself from Piker, referring to him as a "streamer from California" despite their previous public appearances together.

Other prominent Democrats have also publicly distanced themselves from Piker. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin called Piker's statements "disgusting and deplorable" and emphasized that Piker does not represent the Democratic Party or its candidates. Piker's past controversial comments have also included remarks suggesting Jewish Americans were responsible for violence directed at them due to their support for Israel.
