Twitch streamer Hasan Piker has named Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., as his preferred candidate for the 2028 presidential election, stating she is the only potential contender he supports. Piker expressed this preference during a recent interview, asserting that Ocasio-Cortez possesses the ability to energize the Democratic Party's base and mobilize infrequent voters to form a winning coalition.
When presented with a choice between Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., Piker immediately chose the New York congresswoman. He also considered other prominent Democrats, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, and Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md. Piker found Ocasio-Cortez to be distinct from these individuals, stating, "AOC is the only one that I would like."
Piker acknowledged that Ocasio-Cortez's race and gender could pose electoral challenges but argued these are surmountable obstacles. He believes she could overcome these barriers by campaigning with conviction and engaging voters who do not typically participate in elections. "As long as you have moral conviction, as long as you can excite the base, as long as you can actually create a unique coalition and activate low-propensity voters," Piker said, "Which I think AOC has the capacity to do, it would be a fantastic left candidate."
He further compared Ocasio-Cortez favorably to Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., suggesting she could be an even stronger candidate in some respects. However, Piker also offered critiques of Ocasio-Cortez's public presentation, noting her effectiveness on social media and progressive stances in Congress but suggesting she can be overly focused on optics. "The way she carries herself, I think, is a little bit too, like, optics-driven, too liberal and too optics-driven," Piker said. "I think she doesn’t harness the populist rage in the way that she communicates."
Ocasio-Cortez has not yet announced a presidential campaign for 2028 and has previously stated she has not made a decision about running. She has recently increased her national travel, endorsements, and campaign appearances, including a recent visit to Michigan to support progressive Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
