Internet personality Hasan Piker has criticized the recent extravagant wedding of pop star Taylor Swift and NFL player Travis Kelce in New York City, describing it as 'tacky' and a 'dramatic misuse of public resources.' Piker, who identified himself as a Swiftie, shared his views during a recent stream, stating that the high-profile event was a 'bad look' that 'heightens the contradictions.'
Event Details and Criticisms
The wedding ceremony took place on Friday at Madison Square Garden, with approximately 1,000 guests in attendance. The festivities reportedly involved the closure of city streets and a significant police presence, including around 130 NYPD officers and 50 detectives. Piker argued that such an event, regardless of the public figures involved, showcases the extent of billionaire privilege. "No matter how beloved a public figure you might be, you're still - if you're a billionaire, you're still a billionaire and you are going to do billionaire s***," he stated.
He further characterized the wedding as a "glaringly obvious example that this is straightforwardly a flex." Piker suggested the event was designed to demonstrate power and capability, which he found to be "a little tacky. At best."
Wedding Extravagance
The wedding reportedly began with a rehearsal dinner the day prior. The main ceremony on Friday saw a large arrival of approximately 500 chauffeur-driven vehicles. A-list attendees included Karlie Kloss, Hugh Grant, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper, and Dakota Johnson. The bride and groom arrived at Madison Square Garden around 5 p.m. EST, with the venue's billboards displaying 'JusT&T married' at 7:30 p.m. EST. Later, the Empire State Building was illuminated in blue as a tribute, described as Swift's 'something blue.'
The wedding attire was by Christian Dior Haute Couture, designed by Jonathan Anderson. The bride's jewelry was by Cartier, and her shoes were custom-made by Christian Louboutin. Swift's brother, Austin Swift, served as the Man of Honor, and Travis Kelce's brother, Jason Kelce, was the Best Man. The ceremony was officiated by friend Adam Sandler.
The estimated cost for the nuptials, which occurred shortly before the Fourth of July holiday, was $15 million. Sources indicated that the cost for law enforcement presence alone was approximately $160,000.
Pre-Wedding Preparations and Donations
Preparations for the event included significant decoration of the Madison Square Garden interior, reportedly transformed into a garden setting with a castle. Items and equipment, including large white banisters, were observed being loaded into the venue in the preceding week. Guests were reportedly required to sign non-disclosure agreements before receiving wedding details.
Shortly before their wedding, Swift and Kelce reportedly made a donation of $26 million to charities. The couple became engaged in August 2025, and their wedding took place nearly one year later.
